Are You Overwhelmed?
… And overwhelming your customers too?
I had never been to the Cheesecake Factory until last year. After sitting down I was handed the
menu encyclopedia of choices. I’ve never seen something so over the top, so crazy at a restaurant before.
As I flipped through the pages I was faced with an endless amount of options.
You want the light menu? Here are 5 pages. You want pub like food. Here are 10 pages. I don’t even know if that’s what they were title. It doesn’t matter because I glazed over and started to feel panicky when the server came over to ask for drinks. Drinks? Good grief, I hadn’t even found that page yet.
Too many options. Too many pages to flip through. Too much of too much.
As a business owner I feel like we’re often faced with a Cheesecake Factory of options. All pressing for our attention and all needing to be done otherwise instant failure!
- You need to do Facebook Ads.
- You need to be telling your story on Instagram.
- Your crowd is definitely on LinkedIn so you need to have a presence there and be a thought leader in particular groups.
- Have you gotten your SEO down and analytics set up?
- What are you doing about recurring revenue?
- What type of launch are you doing?
We get enough overwhelm in the rest of our lives by just the amount of information and choices available to us each and every day.
But as business owners we have the choice to run our business OUR way. We can curb the overwhelm for ourselves (and for our customers too).
Of course we want to do the best thing for our business, execute the smartest tactic, utilize the savviest way to attract customers and rapidly boost revenue. But faced with all these options – we don’t know where to start or what to do. Which way do we turn? Who do we listen to?
The key is to figure out – and take – the very next intentional step.
We often think of all things we need to do, should do, want to do, want to try… but if you look at ALL those things at once… you instantly fall into a state of overwhelm.
What next step can you take that will get you closer to your desired results?
One. Step. Just one!
I say intentional because we often have a lot of steps that are really just reactions to what’s coming out us. But I want you to think about it. What step will REALLY get you moving towards the outcome you most want for yourself (not to appease someone else).
Contrast that to a restaurant with one beautifully clean sheet of paper and no more than 4 choices for entrees. How do you feel? The decision becomes easier. You may go between two delicious items but usually you can decide pretty quickly and feel good that you knew everything that was available. You feel like you made the best choice.
How can you narrow choices? For yourself and for your customers/clients.
When we work with clients and customers the same things applies.
Are you giving them too many directive, too many choices?
Are YOU overwhelming them by:
- wanting to give them everything you know thinking it’s more valuable
- wanting to prove to them that you know a lot by sharing a lot
- not organizing your information it in such a way that is easily digestible. It’s just information tossed haphazardly at them without regard for how busy and distracted they are.
People are coming to you and paying you for your knowledge or expertise. And this knowledge packaged in such a way that makes it easy to learn and integrate!
And they’re coming to you because they want you to make their life easier — not more complicated. They’re not paying to be more overwhelmed and burdened with information with no clear idea what to do next.
Whatever you can do to create structure, to give very clear and succinct directions, to direct them in such a way that helps them get to their outcome with joy and ease… that should be our goal as entrepreneurs.
But first we have to start with ourselves!
