5 Ways Role Models Can Improve Your Life
As women business owners, we live an age that promotes individuality, authenticity and the creative spirit. At least, we do here at LearnSavvy!
So why might the concept of role models be useful for living a bigger, bolder more purposeful life?
Modeling, imitation or emulation may not appeal to many people in this age of authenticity.
However, one way to use role models is to observe others who are where you want to be – either professionally or personally – and discover the steps they took to get there. Why struggle down a path when you can learn from others who have faced similar challenges and have found success?
You can model strategies, tactics and coping skills and integrate them into your unique path with copying or ripping off other people (if that is a concern to you!).
Learning from others. Not copying other people’s journeys.
Here are 5 ways role models can improve your life:
1 | Provide Short-Cuts
Our journey in life is long, but there are short cuts that can help you bypass some of the challenges and potential suffering along the way. Why recreate the wheel? Even if you don’t personally know someone, you can easily observe or read how they have maneuvered through their life. Reading articles, listening to interviews or Podcasts or picking up their biography can yield some juicy information that could potentially help you on your journey.
2 | Reflects Your Super Powers
As I interviewed women for my book, Women Entrepreneur Revolution: Ready! Set! Launch!, I asked each of them about their role models. They often noted traits that, in fact, reflect qualities they also admire and appreciate in themselves.
If you admire someone, you may want to ask yourself what particular characteristics you’re drawn to. Oftentimes, those qualities are a mirror for you – your own superpowers!
3 | Give Inspiration for What’s Possible
Who doesn’t love a healthy dose of inspiration? When you hear the stories of other people kicking ass in the world, don’t you feel the excitement in your own body and mind?
When you’re busy consumed with your own day-to-day responsibilities, distracted by the minutiae, or overwhelmed by what you want to accomplish, it’s wonderful to find inspiration in others who are doing remarkable work and accomplishing great things.
When you see it’s possible, you know it’s possible for yourself as well.
4 | Help You Become the Best You
Research has shown that by seeking, observing and learning from a coterie of role models you can develop a self-concept that reflects that type of person you want to become.
So seeking out healthy role models can be used as part of your personal development exercise. For instance, if you admire someone for her ability to maintain boundaries, you can model some of her tricks for saying “no” or balancing her needs with the needs of others.
5 | Be a Role Model for Others
If you’re living your best life, you might be surprised to notice how others might be observing the richness of your experiences and the congruence in which you live. Stand up and share how you’ve done it, tell your stories with confidence, be gracious when people complement you and mentor others!
If we all rise up to meet any and every challenge together knowing we’re part of this beautiful intricate web of connections – our world will be a far better place!
